I learned tonight that John Perrotto was fired yesterday from PiratesReport.com. John mentioned in a Facebook post that the site, run by the team, told him they “wanted to go another direction.” Funny, but most Pirate fans are hoping the team will someday go in another direction after 17 consecutive losing seasons.
I worked with John when I was at Baseball America and he was always one of our best correspondents. He did some great stuff for Pirates Report this year. Not that you can see it any more. All of his posts are gone. All that remains are AP stories on the last-place, 99-loss Pirates. Stay classy, Pittsburgh.
In response, I have removed our link to that site. That ought to really get them where it hurts, as we probably drove five or six readers over there this season.
I’m sure John will land on his feet somewhere. Maybe he’ll even get to cover a winning team next year. I guess his bosses got tired of him being honest about the shitty team they put together. They could, alternately, try to build a winner. Not likely to happen any time soon.
Best of luck to John. And I hope the Pirates lose for another 17 straight years.
