The Brewers announced Monday evening that second baseman Rickie Weeks will undergo surgery on his left wrist, and likely miss the rest of the season. This opens up all kinds of considerations.
It now seems likely that Mat Gamel, who was recalled from Triple-A on Thursday, will stay around longer than the Minnesota series this weekend. There’s some thought that the Brewers might sign Ray Durham or trade for a second baseman, but for now the obvious move is that Craig Counsell will play second and they will call up Hernan Iribarren as a backup.
They may also consider sliding Alcides Escobar from shortstop to replace Iribarren at second for Triple-A Nashville, with a view toward promoting him around the Break. But as long as Counsell’s at second, if Bill Hall continues to struggle against right-handed pitching, the obvious move is to play Gamel against righties. And the Brewers, as a predominantly right-handed club, see a lot of right-handed pitchers.
